Info updated on:

Pop Dot Comic is intended to transform photographs into comic-style pictures. The app can be used by anyone, even if they do not have much experience with this type of tool. Fortunately, you get a lot of tips on how to proceed.

You can start by dragging and dropping the desired photo onto the app’s window. Luckily, it supports practically all popular picture formats. Although the default settings can produce good results without the user’s intervention, it is also possible to customize them to your preferences. In this respect, there are multiple transformation presets organized into such categories as Sunday Comics, Halftone, Noir Comics, Pop Comics and Pulp Comics. What is more, there is a button you can use to apply a random preset and see if you like the results.

The right panel allows personalizing the chosen preset by changing dot style and setting dot size. Likewise, it is possible to tweak colors, outline size, border thickness, corner radius and paper tint. Other options include the possibility to add floating text in the form of bubbles and boxes. There are also miscellaneous stickers you can insert, which are called “fun stuff”.

In general, Pop Dot Comics works generally fine and produces nice results. However, it is a shame that it inexplicably quit every time I tried to open the About window. It is good that there is a trial version, although it does not allow saving the resulting images.
