Free Mac Hard Drive Data Recovery is designed to help you recover various types of files that were lost in obscure circumstances. Therefore, you have the chance to retrieve photos, music files, videos, documents, archives, and other uncategorized file types. However, you should know from the very start that you can recover only up to 200 MB for free.

Launching the utility is rather intriguing, as it consists of tedious steps to follow until the main window appears on your desktop. The fact that you need to enter a password every time you open the app and that system changes are required for the application to work, makes you think twice about using the app. Yet, once you overcome these obstacles, you encounter a clear-cut interface displaying the categories of files ready to be selected for scanning. Unfortunately, the tool lacks advanced scan filters like file size, extensions, date of creation, etc., which could narrow the search. Exclusion rules aren't supported either. Once the scan operation is over, you can see the results nicely organized into categories and grouped by file extension. However, the good thing is that you have the ability to preview selected files before enabling the recovery, and thus retrieve only the files that are worth preserving.

In short, the app is easy to manage, yet it isn't of much use. The size limitation and the lack of scan filters make you wonder whether the application is a free tool or just a demonstration of how the app works.
