BookReader is a utility that lets you open and read different e-book formats. The app has support for the following formats: ePub, FB2, DOC, RTF, RTFd, xHTML, Webarchive and TXT. To be honest, the list of supported formats isn't great, and it is missing a few important formats such as PDF and Mobi.

I did my testing of this app exclusively with ePub files, because that is the only e-book format I had at hand. BookReader lets you open your ePub files straight from your Mac or from iTunes, but I have read user reviews that state that this feature won't let you read the books, just import them. The problem may be that this program can't open DRM-protected books, and those purchased through iTunes are protected. I opened a file that didn't have DRM protection and it was opened just fine.

BookReader features a nice-looking book shelf. All the books that you import will be displayed there with their artwork, if it is included. You can double click on books to launch the reader.

The reader, which can be used in full-screen mode, did a great job of loading my sample ePub file. Pages were turned smoothly and the whole experience was very nice.

This application has support for Retina displays, which should make text look quite well thanks to the superior resolution of those displays. Most of the basic features are available, including hypertext links, highlighting, bookmarks, and text search.
